Electrician’s tips on staying safe during power outages

Most property owners are aware of the safety measures to taker during power interruptions. What most do not realize though is that staying safe should remain a priority even after power is restored, especially in the first half hour of power resumption. Builders and Contractors         

The US Department of Homeland Security has published in its official website the steps to take once power is restored.

Electricians on First Aid for Electrical Shocks

“ (1) Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40° F (4° C) for 2 hours or more or that has an unusual odor, color or texture. When in doubt, throw it out! (2) If food in the freezer is colder than 40° F and has ice crystals on it, you can refreeze it. (3) Contact your doctor if you’re concerned about medications having spoiled. (4) Restock your emergency kit with fresh batteries, canned foods and other supplies.”

The Red Cross also published its share of safety tips following a power outage. Electricians           

“If electrical power lines are down, don’t touch them. Keep your family and pets away. Report downed lines to your utility company… Never taste food or rely on appearance or odor to determine its safety. Some foods may look and smell fine, but if they have been at room temperature too long, bacteria causing food-borne illnesses can start growing quickly. Some types of bacteria produce toxins that cannot be destroyed by cooking.”

“Is food in the refrigerator safe during a power outage? It should be safe as long as power is out no more than 4 hours. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard any perishable food (such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers) that have been above 40 °F for over 2 hours. Never taste food to determine its safety! You can’t rely on appearance or odor to determine whether food is safe.”

Electrician-Installed Motion-Sensor Lights

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have the lights automatically turned on upon getting in with handsful of groceries or stuff? This is what motion-sensor lights are all about.

Engadget featured motion sensor lights in one of its blog posts. Builders and Contractors   

"During my demo, I walked through a couple of dim, unlit hallways (much less sinister than it sounds) and the Hue motion sensor flipped the lights on just as I entered. The device has a 100-degree (vertical and horizontal) detection angle and a range of up to about 16 feet, which enables a pretty speedy response time.

Having the sensor isn't just useful for automatically turning the lights on when you enter a room or hallway. It can also trigger them, say, when you wake up in the middle of the night and need to go to the bathroom without fumbling for a light switch in the dark. Plus, you can use the app to set a night scene that's dimmer and easier on your sensitive, barely awake eyes. Philips had set up rows of Hue lights under a bed and along the walls, which, when set to a low brightness, lent a soft, warm glow to the room so obstacles were visible."

The Family Handyman also shared yet another type of Motion-Sensor Lights. Electricians   

"I like to have my garage and walkway well lit when I come home at night, so years ago I installed a motion sensor fixture on my garage. I've never been happy with it because the motion sensor is so unreliable. Either it doesn't catch motion or it stays on all night. So I was really excited to try out the new Revolve LED TM by All-Pro TM . This isn't one of those cheap plastic units. The body is made from die-cast aluminum, so it's built to last. The individual LED lights are extremely well made and easy to aim. Plus, it comes fully assembled, so installation is easy."

Electrician’s Tips on Cleaning Light Bulbs

Light bulbs need regular cleaning too, and there are many benefits to having cleaner and clearer light bulbs.

One of which is getting to maximize the illumination provided by the light bulb.

But how does one properly clean a light bulb without breaking or damaging it?

Lightbulbs.com gave some pointers. American Lighting Association 

"Of course, you'll want to start by switching off the power to each bulb you plan on cleaning! Let any hot bulbs cool completely before you begin handling them. Once you hone in on your dirtiest bulbs, decide whether it's easier to clean them in their light fixtures or remove them from the socket first. This will depend on where the fixture is and whether it's safe for you to clean it in the fixture. For example, removing a bulb from a ceiling can light is likely safer than standing atop a ladder for an extended time wiping it down."

For light bulbs that are already busted and are due for disposal, the website Save On Energy.com shared an article on how to safely dispose used light bulbs. Master Electrician

"Back when incandescent lighting was the norm, no one thought twice about throwing away their old light bulbs. In fact, most people didn't think much about the environment. Now that our collective conscious has caught up, we have the task of figuring out what to do when CFL light bulbs burn out or break. The main reason properly disposing of CFLs is important lies in their key ingredient – mercury. There isn't a lot of mercury in each light bulb, but inhaling mercury vapor can cause negative neurological effects."
